Do Humans Ever Become Angels?

Do Humans Ever Become Angels?

I think the misconception that they do comes from the following passage: Mark 12:24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26Now about the dead rising–have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? (NIV)

I think a lot of people misinterpret this passage to mean that the dead become angels, when it says that they become LIKE angels. In context, Jesus is simply saying that those in heaven are not married or given in marriage like they are on earth.

Angels are special servants of God, and are different from human beings. A lot of modern teaching about angels is that they’re actually “spirit guides” or that human beings become angels at death. This type of thinking is very common in the New Age movement. However, this type of belief is contrary to Scripture and should not be held up as a Christian belief. I believe that any teaching about angels should be examined to see if it’s in keeping with Scripture.

Should we believe that our deceased loved ones become angels? No. Should we have hope that our loved ones who knew Christ will be in God’s presence for eternity? Yes!
