Where Does the Bible Say That Jesus is God?

It’s commonly alleged that not only did Jesus never claim to be God, but that Christians elevated Him to the level of godhood long after His earthly life and ministry. It’s the stuff that conspiracy theories are made of, and appeals to many who are fed up with “organized religion” and looking to deny historic, orthodox beliefs. The biggest problem with this belief? Jesus’ claims of divinity are His own and are substantiated in the Bible.

1 John 1:1-3, 14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being…And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” NASB

The Word (logos in New Testament Greek) refers to Christ. Not only is He described as being there in the beginning, He is also called the Creator. As there is only one God, the only way that Jesus could be the Creator of all things is if He is fully God. There are no reasons to conclude that God could’ve created a series of lesser beings that share His attributes, as we see in this passage from Isaiah 45:

5 “I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God I will gird you, though you have not known Me; 6That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun That there is no one besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other 21“Declare and set forth your case; Indeed, let them consult together Who has announced this from of old? Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, A righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me.”

<>John 8:57So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”59Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.”<>

<>John 10:30“I and the Father are one. 31The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him.32Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?”33The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.”

For Jesus to have made these statements if He were not God in human form would have been blasphemous. Indeed, the Jewish leaders of the day felt that His statements were blasphemy. Jesus statement of I AM was a clear claim of divinity, as this was the Name God identified Himself as when appearing to Moses.

1 John 19 “We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. ”

So, we see here that, contrary to some claims, the  apostles acknowledged  Jesus as God in the flesh.
I’d like to close with an excellent quote from CS Lewis: “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” Mere Christianity
