Clergy Shortages

Story on the Church in Wales

A recent story on the Church in Wales highlighted a problem that solutions are being sought for. Several priests are nearing retirement age, with few prospects for new, younger candidates for ordination. However, the church is starting a campaign to help combat this issue, including a special website for vocations in the Church of Wales.

What do you think causes so few to seriously consider whether there’s a call to the ordained ministry? Do you think the discernment process in some dioceses/churches is a large hindrance for some?

  1. Well, the Episcopal Church has had for over 40 years more priests than we have jobs for. Perhaps these many priests could discern Our Lord is calling them to move to Wales and labor in that vineyard, all would work out right. I’m not holding my breath though….leaps of faith are rather rare in the clergy.

    • A good idea. It seems like you always hear about the shortages in certain dioceses, but very little about priests who are “out of work”, so to speak.
