Sunday’s Scripture readings had a lot to say about people’s moods and reactions to things. We hear about people weeping, suffering and rejoicing, as well as God’s promises to those who are in bondage in any way. I think these comforting words are timely in light of a lot of pain people are going through.
A lot of people seem to have had a bad year last year, and several people I know haven’t had this year go much better so far. Personal pain and struggles, combined with people being increasingly divisive about things political and religious, can certainly make life a little too difficult.
Yet, these verses offer com fort and hope. We can still rejoice, because God’s joy is our strength. (Nehemiah 8:8-10). We are bound together in fellowship with one another so that our sufferings can be shared (1 Corinthians 12:12-31a). Jesus has already fulfilled the prophets’ words about good news and release for all of us. (Luke 4:14-21)
Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, * O LORD, my strength and my redeemer.
